Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

I haven’t had a Gripe about Call Centres for ages but they are still top of my Irritation/Annoyance list.

It is interesting to note that sometimes in its advertising, a firm will state that its Call Centre is in the UK – even if it is in Gateshead or Scotland where it is almost as difficult to understand the accent as it is to understand those in the Far East – but at least the jobs are going to our own folk.

I haven’t used my Barclaycard for over a year – and wanted to know if it was still extant. First I had to do the security checks – fine – then listen to this automated man rabbiting on about all sorts of things to do with the FSA and then asking me to speak my question which he completely misunderstood - more rabbiting. Finally I got put through to a Call Centre – yes you’ve guessed – In India. I repeat that these folk are always polite but it is so frustrating when they don’t understand the nuances of our language. My question was simple but when the operator announced that she’d have to put me through yet more security questions, I hung up. Phone companies must make a mint out of these calls especially when you get minutes worth of automated replies

I loathe Call Centres, I loathe the automated Press buttons 1 to 100 by which time you’ve forgotten the options. I know we can’t go back to the good old days when one spoke to a person who worked for the firm and knew the answers, but how I wish we could. I really am a Grumpy Old Woman – perhaps I’ve lived too long because I have reached the stage where I think constantly and longingly of the way things were.
