Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

Date: 21st April 2014

I'm sure you get worked up over certain things - I know I do.

Recently I had to travel cross-country and the road between Newent and King's Lynn was a nightmare because two vehicles - one large lorry and one small car were being driven at 40mph in a 60mph zone.  Nothing could get past and there was an incredibly long line of traffic piled up behind them.  This is the kind of situation which makes people take unnecessary risks in overtaking.  So, I think people should be fined for driving too slowly just as they are for driving too fast.

Sorry but I'm losing patience with those folk in secure pensionable jobs.  Their pensions are index linked and gold plated.  They complain about getting a very small rise - they should count themselves lucky.  Do they give a thought to many of those who are self-employed to whom an annual rise is an unheard of luxury.

And what about we pensioners - not only have our savings devalued because of the derisory interest rate but our pensions don't even remotely touch the increase in the cost of living.  My State pension is not very large.  Unfortunately, in my line of business, employers wanted you on a Freelance base/on Contract - that way they didn't have to pay into a pension scheme and could dismiss you whenever they felt like it.

When I finally got to a stage where I could afford to pay into a pension I put my money into the Equitable which thanks to Mr. Gordon Brown went belly up!

I have lost all respect for so many professions which, in the past, were shining examples of dedication and vocation.  Most of my teachers were respected and very hard working.  To go on strike would have been total anathema to them.   And we read about the nurses too qualified to carry out the more lowly tasks which they did automatically in the past.

Mind you, I put a great deal of blame on the ghastly Tony Blair who decreed that 50% of youngsters should go to University - and what for when they do courses in subjects which are not going to equip them for today's world.  And wasn't he the bloke who brought in the tick box generation of meeting targets and if they didn't work, then bring in another initiatiive.  And is anyone ever going to have the '.....' to bring him to book as a War Criminal.  Look at him - making millions around the world with his lecuring and his posturing.  I wouldn't cross the road to hear him lecture on anything.

That's Buy three, get one free or Buy Two, Get one half price.

I live on my own and have an incredibly small fridge and freezer.  I can't take advantage of these offers and object to basically subsidising families and those who want to buy up big.  Of course, the biggest culprits are the Supermarkets - they get better deals if they buy in bulk and offload.  Why one earth they can't put an honest price on a single item is beyond me.  But I believe that it is all to do with the Greed society in which we live - the Greed to make more profit and the Greed to eat more than your body really needs.

My sister made a good point recently.  Unfotunately she is a smoker - filthy habit.  But she does have a point when she asks why they print disgusting pictures on packets of cigarettes warning of the health hazard - and asks why don't they publish photos of grossly obese folk on Macdonalds etc and warn of the dangers of overeating!!  Not allowed - probably because the Food Manufacturers are 'in bed' with the politicians and lobby them successfully.  I've read that Obese people don't see themselves as such because they see so many others in that condition that they think it normal.

Does anyone ever call into question what is the cost to the NHS  in Gastric bands, Diabetes treatment, hip and knee replacements etc.  No wonder the NHS is creaking under the strain.

Enough.  I really am a Grumpy Old Woman and writing this down has actually stressed me. So Goodbye for now.  I'm sure there are many of you who agree with me but like these and other matters we are scared to actually say what we mean for fear of the PC  brigade.
