Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

Ch 5 - Gibraltar - Britain in the Sun - MOUCHOTTE BUILDING - RAF HQ GIBRALTAR

Date: 9th February 2014

In September, I was invited to Gibraltar where they were about to rename the RAF HQ - Mouchotte Building in honour of 'my' French pilot Rene Mouchotte.  He was the French pilot whose name I sponsored on the Wall of Remembrance at the BOB Memorial at Capel le Ferne and about whom, after five years, I finally succeeded in having a short documentary made.  This and a meeting with an Army Colonel who lived in Mouchotte Close, Biggin HIll and was subsequently posted to Gibraltar, led to the RAF Chief deciding to rename the Headquarters Mouchotte Building.

At the time, Channel 5 were on the Rock filming a second series of Gibraltar - Britain in the Sun.  I was asked if I'd be interviewed and having agreed  found myself doing a half day's filming for them.  One never knows whether your contribution will be used, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that my piece is being used and has been promo'ed in the current TV schedules.  So I shall watch, with bated breath and fingers crossed that they do justice to Rene.

Transmission is on Channel 5, Tuesday, 11th February at 8.00 pm.

17th Feb.  I was bitterly disappointed.  They'd hacked my contribution to pieces, missed the point and didn't even show the Mouchotte plaque on the renamed RAF HQ. They got half a day's filming out of me (gratis) most of which wasn't shown.  Mind you, when you get something for nothing it is never appreciated.

I wasn't bothered for myself but they certainly didn't do the Mouchotte story any justice whatsoever. In my opinion, that is the nature of so much television nowadays.  Badly or inadequately researched and done on the cheap.  I wasn't even informed of the TX and certainly didn't receive the promised DVD -  which I wanted for my archive material on René.  Having seen the programme I wouldn't bother keeping a copy.

These days I rarely watch anything on the 5 Terrestrial channels - nearly all reality, cheap and cheerful.  My viewing tends to be BBC Four and ITV Three.  However, programmes which were already repeats are now coming round again so in the end there'll be nothing to watch.
