Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

NEW LAMPS FOR OLD - or rather Lampshades

Date: 27th September 2014

I have two very attractive Moorcroft lamp bases where the shades were decidedly past their best.  I liked the shape of the shade, bought about 20 years ago when there was a fashion for slightly oriental shapes.

So, with the shade in a bag I made for my favourite store - John Lewis.  Although he was polite, the young assistant in Lighting took one look at my shade and said 'That's old'.  I know it is but I could see nothing other than round, oval, square and rectangular shades and mine is a clover leaf design.  Also I could see nothing much beyond, beige, cream and pale grey - no colours at all.  I then proceeded to other stores and even to Homebase and B & Q.  No luck whatsoever and then I found a service online which refurbishes your old lampshade and the much loved shape.

A few emails passed between myself and Ian Holbrook of Premier Lampshades Ltd.  They do have an extensive range of lampshade shapes from which to choose but they will happily cover your own.

I sent Ian a photo of the base and also the two old shades.  I can't tell you what a fantastic job they did.  My previous shades 'did the job' but Ian has picked out a much stronger colour from the base and the result is superb.  Also, slightly weird but he chose the colour of the raw silk surrounding the photo frame in which I have a photo of my sponsored pilot René Mouchotte.  He hadn't seen this nor did he know of it.

The photo doesn't do justice to the prettiness of the shade when lit at night.

They have an excellent website and I'm happy to recommend their service.  Of course, it is more expensive than an 'off the peg' shade but then it is handcrafted and not one of dozens off an assembly line.  Do have a look at their website and you will see not only the variety of shade shapes, materials, finishes etc. but some of the intricate steps which go into the making of what appears to be a simple lampshade.
