Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

DRIVING LICENCE RENEWAL

Date: 18th July 2014

DRIVING LICENCE RENEWALS

Just a word of advice. I had to present both parts of my driving licence a few days ago and it was pointed out that the photo card was very out of date though the paper part doesn’t expire till next year. I was in a panic because not having your documentation current carries a fine of £1,000.

I girded my loins and went to the Post Office in Deal expecting all kinds of barriers, tutting and heaven knows what sort of bureaucracy. However I discovered that, because of a glitch in the system, many of us have not had renewal reminders though why both parts did not carry the same date is a mystery to me and to Jan who dealt with me so patiently. In fact I was able to do everything there and then - photo, renewal etc. I did have to pay the charge even though I’ve now reached the age where it should be free! I won’t hold my breath for a refund as many years ago I had my car off the road for many months and filled in the SORN notification etc. I never did get the refund on my licence and simply couldn’t be bothered to go through the hassle of trying to get through to an actual person in a government department - perhaps that is what they rely on.

Anyway, huge thanks to Jan at Payden’s in Deal and might I suggest that you all check as to whether your licences are up to date or not.
