Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

Date: 1st February 2013

I had some fabulous feedback from the programme and there was a common appraisal that the programme was too short and that it was obvious there were many omissions. I can assure you I could fill an hour with all the film and information I have on René and his family but I must be thankful for small mercies.

On Wednesday I travelled to York in order to record some inserts for when the programme goes out in the BBC North Region. Sadly they have only apportioned ten minutes of the programme to René’s story so even more will be cut to make way for film of the invaluable help given by Ian Reed, Director of the Yorkshire Air Museum in my ‘Search for René’. Apparently large chunks, like the whole piece about the finding of his body on the beach in Belgium, will have to go – it’s a great shame but there again at least the story, cut though it will be, reaches a wider audience.

I thought I was cold enough filming on the Cliffs above Folkestone at Capel le Ferne, but I nearly took off without wings on the Airfield at Elvington – it was freezing and blowing a gale. However the producer thinks she has got some very good inserts and I really didn’t mind freezing for my art.

The programme is due for transmission on Monday, 25th February at 7.30 in the ‘Inside Out’ slot on BBC 1 North region.
