Shoreham Airshow 2007
Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

JESSOPS

Date: 9th January 2013

JESSOPS

I do hope it won’t happen but I daresay it will. I read today that Jessops is likely to go into Administration.

I know we can’t halt the march of progress but these days it’s like a full scale running marathon.

I know I’m a dinosaur and a technophobe but I really do not like buying ‘On-line’ and resist it as much as possible. I’m afraid that I like to talk to an assistant and have help by someone who actually speaks my language and can explain technicalities to me.

Over the past few years I’ve had so much invaluable help from the friendly staff at Jessops in Canterbury who have never shown impatience at what, to them, must seem the most basic of questions.   I’ve never been good at reading and understanding instructions (especially when they are written by someone in a far off country whose native language is not English and I don’t find the diagram instructions any more comprehensive) so that on many an occasion I’ve had to go to Jessops, show my ignorance and have them explain how to use my rather complicated but very lovely Sony Cyber Shot.  Actually these days you nearly die of shock at the thickness of the instruction manuals - that's if there is one - the latest wheeze is to make you go 'On-line' and print it off yourself at the expense of your paper and ink.  You’d laugh if I admitted some of the basic questions I’ve had to pose and I only just get by using the contraption. Same with my mobile phone where I probably only use 10% of its facilities.

So although I doubt there will be a satisfactory outcome for we, the old fogeys who actually like a bit of social intercourse with our shopping- here’s saying a prayer that Jessops may yet be saved from the Call Centre Axe!

One of the most successful businesses around is the John Lewis Partnership - and why is that? The assistants are all partners and share in the success of the stores so they go that extra mile to help you.  Although, to be fair, even the quality of their staff is not what it used to be.

Addendum - HOW VERY SAD TO LEARN THAT JESSOPS HAVE CLOSED DOWN NOW.
