Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

BT - Possible Mis-selling??

BT – Mis-selling??

I’ve enjoyed very good Broadband speed for most of this year after constant loss of my landline and repeated Broadband loss led BT to fit a new ‘Box’ stating that the old one to our flats was probably over 50 years old and well past its sell-by date. I had no complaints except that I was constantly told that I’d exceeded my Broadband allowance – I don’t download films or anything like that so was a trifle mystified – then I discovered it was because of  downloading many of the attachments which people send me.

Anyway, about a month ago a woman (in this country) phoned and asked if I were interested in BT Infinity and Unlimited Broadband and also YouView. We talked and I was convinced that this was a good idea. At the moment I subscribe to Lovefilm because I particularly like old films many in black and white. I also have a superb Humax Freeview box which gives me access to channels like BBC4, ITV3, More4 and many many others.

Although the operative admitted that I was her first ‘YouView’ sale (on which they get commission) she seemed to know what she was talking about. I enquired as to what I would be receiving and was told that I’d have access to films but would have to pay-to-view new releases – perfectly acceptable and understandable. I remember asking if I’d be able to access channels like History, Geography and Discovery. She kept me on hold for a short while and came back to say that this would be possible. (I’ve never been interested in a Sky package because I have no interest in Sport)
We even discussed the fact that the extra I would now be paying BT would be offset by relinquishing my Lovefilm membership.

So everything was installed and to my horror I discovered that I could not access any films at all without payment. My lovely computer helper Paul came around and checked everything including my ‘Package’. Sure enough, I cannot access films without payment (minimal for old films and considerably more for more up to date releases) because I’m on a basic package – THIS WAS NOT EXPLAINED TO ME.
However if I pay more monthly, I will have access to a library of guess what – 200 films. They must be joking – Lovefilm has a library of thousands.

Paul too expressed absolute amazement as he too understood that there would be access to a wide selection of films.

So I’m stuck – BT have installed a new Humax box and I’m now caught with two packages. Yet again it is an 18 month contract for BT Infinity and 12 months for YouView.

I have gained very little. If I wanted to catch anything on Iplayer, 4 OnDemand and Demand5, I would access the programmes on my computer which has a large screen. I probably did this a couple of times a month. Currently,  if I want to do that I can access through my TV - big deal!

I don’t think I’m unintelligent and neither is Paul but we both feel that I have been mis-sold.

So now my BT bill has risen considerably, I have gained little and will have to go back to Lovefilm in order to view the kind of films I enjoy – invariably non-violent, romantic, old fashioned and very often black and white.

So Caveat Emptor and don’t do business with an operative who openly admits she hasn’t made this kind of sale.  My Broadband speed is no better than it was because it was very good anyway and I have a Humax box which is not as user friendly as my old one - or maybe I just have to get used to it.
