Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

PORGY AND BESS - Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury

Date: 29th June 2012

PORGY AND BESS – Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury

Porgy and Bess has to be one of my all time favourites with such memorable numbers as ‘Summertime’ and ‘I got Plenty of Nuttin’.

A few weeks ago I watched a documentary on George Gershin and found it sad that he died without knowing what a hit ‘Summertime’ became. (He didn’t rate the number as one of his better compositions) There are an astonishing number of versions worldwide – and if my memory serves me correctly I think it was over 24,000 – imagine that.

The production at the Marlowe was a pre-London run with the Cape Town City Opera. The best loved songs were delivered superbly and the Chorus was outstanding but I’m not sure that the story really translates into an Opera rather than a musical. My friends and I were a trifle disappointed. Having said that, it was still an enjoyable evening and, of course, we paid considerably less for our very good seats than one would pay in London.
