Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

ASSISTANT GUIDE AT CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL

Date: 14th April 2011

ASSISTANT GUIDE – CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL

I did it! Passed the Assessment and am now officially an Assistant Guide for Canterbury Cathedral – and the learning will never cease.

Am reasonably confident when it comes to ‘stories’ about The Martyrdom of Thomas Becket – the Tombs of Henry 1V, the Black Prince and Archbishop Chichele. Even the Stained Glass Windows are beginning to unlock their mysteries. The architecture is also becoming more clear. I’m going to compile a small album with photos of the most famous sites in the Cathedral because sometimes areas are closed for services and at least one can show the visitors what they might be missing. And I’ll have the main dates etc. as a crib-sheet.

They are very short of Assistants for the weekends so I’ve volunteered for Sundays and hope there will be enough visitors wanting to enquire about the Cathedral and will also use the time for boning up on all the information.

Treated myself to a few days off visiting friends and have had days laden with feasts for the eyes from flowers to Cathedrals. As I can only enter one photo per blog I’ll split the subjects and then enter more in the Gallery.

My new Sony Cyber-Shot is ‘FANTASTIC’ – cannot believe the quality of the shots I’m getting. Still a few areas to iron out but that’s down to my inability to read/follow instructions. (So thank you Jenny at Jessups – the camera really is a gem and an amazing improvement on the Nikon last year and even on my original Sony)
