Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

Sharon Penman - Eleanor of Aquitaine

SHARON PENMAN – Lovely surprise

Quite a few bits and pieces to tell you about but I wanted to share a delightful moment with you which restores my faith in human nature. After the experience in Celebrity Five Go To……….. – it was refreshing to be in touch with a highly talented and obviously caring person in the form of the author Sharon Penman.

I first became a fan of Sharon’s writing about 20 years ago when she wrote her first blockbuster historical novel – The Sunne in Splendour. And I’ve bought and read everything she’s had published since then.

The Internet can be a marvelous tool and recently I idly typed in her name to see whether she’d written anything recently. There was some box which invited one to receive her newsletters and I filled it in.

A few days ago I received an email informing me about this amazing trip to France which she is conducting later this year following in the steps of Eleanor of Aquitaine (one of my heroines). I immediately shot off an email asking to be on the list and to my utter astonishment received a reply – not from a dismembered body headed ‘noreply’ but from the great woman herself. It was a friendly email informing me that the tour was booked out but I could ask to go on the reserve list and she had written the email and told me she was just going out for the day. How many times do you beat your head against a brick wall because you simply cannot get through to a person. (I subscribe to the admirable Jacquie Lawson email greetings cards and at Christmas spent extra in sending a few special people her Advent Calendar – unfortunately only half the recipients could open the Calendar because it needed Adobe Flash – could I get any sense out of them or even a refund – NO)

So, apart from regarding Sharon Penman  highly as an author, I now worship at the altar of a talented woman who has time to reply to her fans.

Anyone who enjoys a really good historical read should catch up with Sharon’s main titles – The Sunne in Splendour, Here Be Dragons, The Reckoning and Falls the Shadow. I remember reading Here Be Dragons and wondering about the authenticity of the relationship between Llewellyn and Joan and his forgiveness of her infidelity – and it was all absolutely true. Sharon is currently working on her novel about Richard the Lionheart which she’s had to divide into two separate books because there is so much historical detail she can’t possibly deal with in just one tome.

I can’t wait to read it and eagerly wait to here if anyone has dropped out of the tour. Not only that, but I’d so much like to meet such a talented, gifted and down to earth lady.

If you want to find out more – just Google Sharon Penman.
