Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

Date: 15th December 2010

AUSTRALIA, MELBOURNE & THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD Flight with Quantas was very pleasant - lovely crew but, oh my goodness, the uniform for the women is, in my opinion, hideous - I can't think that a top International model would look good in it. The dress is like a Paisley print except the print is of things Aboriginal and the predominant colour is grey - honestly the designer might have been being patriotic but hardly gave a thought to the different shapes and sizes who'd be wearing the outfit.

I have never ever been subjected to a more intrusive 'pat down' as I was at Heathrow. I don't know what it is about me but I invariably seem to set off the security machine and am always told it is a random selection. The woman was so invasive of my body that I stiffened whereupon she called her supervisor. I have been body searched at Airports all over the world but nothing was like this one - roll on the day when they have the X-ray machines - to my way of thinking they are far less intrusive and humiliating than the 'groping' to which we are subjected now.

It was lovely to be met at the Airport by my son and friends - Jacquie and Tom Fogarty - and great to be back in Australia although the weather over the last few days has made me wonder where I am. I wore my polo-necked sweater for 3 days being the only warm clothing I had. Today, Tuesday, the weather is lovely but a cold front is predicted to be on its way back. Australia - like the rest of the world is experiencing unseasonal weather.

Yesterday and far beyond the call of friendship, my host drove my son and lady friend and myself down the Great Ocean Road and on to the Twelve Apostles except there aren't twelve any more - they've been subject to even further erosion but they were a sight worth seeing. I say the trip was beyond the call of friendship because dear Tom drove for about 7 hours. Today the temperature is about what it should be for the time of year. My friends are at work so I'm sitting in their garden typing this. Tonight they are taking me to the Opera to see A Midsummer Night's Dream which should be great.  In fact it wasn't.  The set was lovely and the costumes superb (they'd majored on Shakespeare's 'dark child' and the setting was Indian) but we weren't keen on Britten - so we left after Act 2.  I must say the programme was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen.  I vowed I'd stop collecting 'things' but I simply cannot throw away this gorgeous programme.

The lovely gentleman who contacted me and offered to send me a DVD of the Homicide in which I featured in 1965 actually came over for drinks and personally gave me the disc. I couldn't wait to watch it. Even I hardly recognised myself - jet black hair and a totally different profile (before my car accident and the necessary nose job). The programme was in black and white of course and was incredibly dated but all the old famous Aussie Actors were there and it was enormous fun to watch. Peter has promised me another DVD - apparently I was in two episodes - didn't even remember that. Oh how I wish I'd been able to stay in Australia and in Theatre and acting which was always my first love. Bye for now, Jan.
