Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here .......... 2010

Date: 14th November 2010

I have better things to do with my time but having read the article in the Mail (told you I buy the Saturday edition because it has the best run down of TV and Radio programmes) about the contestants in this year’s I’m a Celebrity …… I’m afraid I really do have to put something to rest even if my blog is only read by a few hundred people. Yet again I’ve been referred to as ‘Screaming Leeming’.

In 1987 I was mugged within the hallowed portals of the BBC Television Centre (the front entrance looked like Fort Knox and the back (the OB bay) was like a leaky colander).  Anyone could have got in over the fence at the back of the building and they did .....

I was mugged in the Newsreader’s Office (next to the John Craven Newsround offices). It was quite a journey from the 6th floor down to the News studio. I was obviously disturbed – wouldn’t you be if you’d had Acid sprayed into your face! I didn’t run down to the newsroom screaming. I think I picked up my briefcase and again think I dropped it off in the Newsreader’s make up room. I really cannot remember all the details but of one thing I am certain. I did not enter the Newsroom ‘screaming’. I remember finding it hard to get out my words but ‘screaming’ I was not. However for the Press the headline of ‘Screaming Leeming’ was a good one and this damned epithet has stuck to me. I really wouldn’t mind if it were true but it is not – like so much of which is stored on microfilm and about which we can do nothing. How many interviews have I had to politely correct the (usually) young interviewer by saying ‘Well, actually that is not the truth ……’

Apart from superficial burning to my lips and tongue and obvious distress, I was otherwise unhurt.  But a few weeks later I went down with Mumps Meningitis caught off my son who had Mumps very mildly.  I think I caught it because my resistance was obviously rather low.  I remember being in hospital at the time of the sinking of the Herald of Free Enterprise - a roll on  roll off ferry which turned over because the bow doors had not been shut properly. The accident resulted in the deaths of 193 passengers and crew.

Anyway, I did not enter the newsroom screaming but journalists are still using this non-truth to describe me. None of the journalists would have put the error correct as most of them were of a Leftist leaning and I was not although in the seven years of reading News for the BBC I would never have attended any meeting or Charity function which supported the Party for which I would have voted – not so sure now though.

I am sick and tired of this error including the errors on Wikipaedia – again which I cannot correct – and just felt I’d let fly and have my say.  However humble, those of us in the public eye come in for a great deal of criticism.  It goes with the territory and I'm happy to accept honest criticism but am sick and tired of inaccuracies about me and my life.

Just a little aside,  when I was a guest on The Great British Waste Food Banquet a few months ago,  I met Lempik Opit – whom I found to be an amusing and intelligent person. He mentioned that he’d been asked several times to appear on ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here …….’ And had turned it down. I’m quite sure it’s not because of my advice, but I suggested that if it were offered again he’d be well advised to accept. I would never use the word ‘Enjoy” but being on that programme was a Life Changing and indeed a Life Enhancing Experience for me.
