Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

Date: 14th September 2016

Have just heard that

'The Real Marigold Hotel' won a Rose d'Or award in Berlin last night! It is one of the most coveted and prestigious awards in Europe - so it's a massive honour to take home the trophy. Over 400 programmes from more than 130 broadcasters and production companies in 33 different countries were submitted for this year's awards.

The category we won is called best reality and factual entertainment - which encompasses all factual TV and documentaries across the whole of Europe. The other two final nominees were a feature documentary from the UK (that opened the Sundance festival) about the formation of Greenpeace and a Swedish series called The Gym Teacher (a bit like a fitness version of Jamie's School Dinners and The Choir) so it was very tough competition!

That is fabulous news.  I have to say that all these months later people are still stopping me in the supermarket and on the street to express their pleasure with the series.  Even on duty in the Cathedral I've had folk stopping to talk about it - and that then gives me a chance to extol the virtues and wonders of our fabulous Cathedral.

Another series in which I took part 'Who's Doing the Dishes' has also received a nomination for the 6th annual National Reality Television Awards.  I've been invited and am delighted to say that we can wear evening dress. I may be old fashioned but I like to dress for the occasion and so few opportunites arise these days. Dress code is usually Smart Casual - whatever that is.  I'm either Smart or Casual??

There will be another Real Marigold series next year with another 8 well known pensioners and there's also a spin-off programme with a few of the originals - not me though.  But I can't give you any information because I have none.

This was a publicity shot but, as I have no others of all of us together, I don't think the BBC will mind my using it.
