Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

HIGHLIGHTS OF TUSCANY - Just You Singles Holidays

Not having been on a booked/organised holiday since the 70’s, I have nothing against which to compare my holiday in Tuscany. All I can say is that it was superb. The group was looked after from the moment we arrived at Gatwick to the time we left Pisa Airport after a packed seven days.

The group comprised 20 women and 6 men and though we were predominantly in the upper age group there were several younger women in their forties. The one element we had in common was a desire to see the wonderful Tuscan towns and admire the art and artefacts. Our holiday included visits to Florence, Sienna, San Gimignano, Pisa, Elba and Lucca. I had visited all but the last two previously but these are places one never tires of revisiting.

Our Tour Manager, Jonathan Clarke, could not be faulted - he was considerate, attentive and incredibly knowledgeable about the places we visited - often giving us titbits of information you don’t find on any websites. We were based centrally to the visits in a small family run hotel at Cecina on the coast. The staff were very helpful and though we didn’t have the niceties of a 5star I actually prefer the individuality of a smaller place. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the hot water was instant and plentiful! Maybe things have improved over the years but I have memories of hotels where, if you weren't up with the larks, all the hot water was gone!!

The furthest coach ride was one and a half hours to Florence but with Jonathan’s commentaries and congenial company, the trips seemed short. Also the Tuscan countryside is stunning and I never tired of looking at it. We had a few relatively early starts but it was to our advantage as we mostly arrived ahead of the hordes. The coach was ours and we could leave our belongings behind when we were dropped off as close as was permitted  to the centres of the various towns.

Guides were organised for us in Florence and Sienna after which we were free to roam and do our sightseeing at the pace which suited us all individually. I had expected to be wandering around on my own but actually teemed up with a couple of lovely ladies and shared many a laugh with them.  Thank you Di and Sybil - looking forward to meeting up again in the near future.

I was on the holiday for the Just You experience and I was impressed particularly because absolutely everything was taken care of - we were looked after and Jonathan set the pace of walking to accommodate the slowest. Just you advises on the amount and type of walking which will be part of the holiday. Mind you, the only people to do the 296 stairs in the leaning tower of Pisa were myself and the Just You PR Manager who had come along to ease me into a JY Holiday and to experience it for himself.

Just You Singles Holidays were the first in the market ten years ago and other companies now offer similar experiences. To stay ahead of the game JY decided to bring me on board as Ambassadress to not only get a feel for the product but to be able to spread the word at places like Olympia. I would never take on a role like this if I didn’t think the product was a good one and indeed I do. Perhaps if I’d known of them years ago I might have been bolder in taking organised holidays but, as they say, better late than never.

Just You has an impressive brochure of almost 70 venues around the world from which you can take your pick. I also have to experience one of their Long Haul Holidays and wonder where they will choose to send me - Watch this space.

Bye for now, Jan
