Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

Date: 8th September 2010

So what have the two to do with each other.

Well, believe it or not on 28th April 2007 we experienced an earthquake here in our little corner of Kent - 4.3 on the Richter Scale.  Folkestone was most affected but the shock waves spread here.  It was early morning and I happened to be doing some exercises for my back whilst lying on the floor.  Suddenly the wall lights were shaking and my decanters were rattling against one another.  For a split second I wondered what on earth the people in the flat above me were doing and then realised that my living room has nothing above it but a roof.  Yes, it was an earthquake lasting for seconds but it did damage.  I live in a flat in an old house with lathe and plaster ceilings and the ceiling did not like this treatment.  Gradually over the intervening years cracks have appeared until they could no longer be ignored.  You won't believe how long it takes to replace a ceiling - almost three weeks and apparently is a filthy job.  Therefore I have to leave my home for that time as the remainder of the flat will be sealed off to try and minimise the dirt.  Am going to make good use of the time by visiting friends all round the country - some of whom I haven't seen for over 15 years.  So what has this to do with the Ipad - well, I suppose it was a bit of an indulgence but I thought it would keep me in touch with the world and allow me to access and write my blog.  (Some of my friends are not connected to the Internet and if you pay the extra you can get an Ipad where you insert a Sim and are allowed access to the Internet - so done all that and was looking forward to the lightness of the Ipad as opposed to the weight of the laptop)

So I waited impatiently for my Ipad and got my Computer helper, Paul, to assist me with familiarisation.  Apparently if you are used to an Iphone, then there's no problem but my choice had to be an Iphone or an Ipad and I chose the latter.  So far so good and in most areas, I'm very pleased with it BUT one of the biggest reasons for it's purchase is not happening.  I can access my Website and the editing facility but then the machine beats me and won't allow me to type anything in my Blog.  I was assured that I would have access to my Site - and indeed I can but there it all comes apart.  I don't know if there will be a Software upgrade which will allow access but for the present I am very very very disappointed.  Another reason for buying the Ipad was to be able to take it with me on my travels and be able to report back instantaneously instead of building up a backlog.

So, unless I can get on to the Internet at the houses of friends who might have access, you won't be hearing from me for a few weeks - and I know I still owe you the story on my fabulous Italian holiday - but, once I'm back in the flat, sorted and settled, I've no pressing engagements and will spend time writing and loading photos.

As a little Cheerio, I will load a few photos from the last few months, as  I've done nothing since Calendar Girls.

A bientot - your homeless correspondent, Jan.

P.S.  Just a reminder that I've had the Site upgraded so that you can now click on All Posts and up will come a title and a line or two on every subject I've posted since opening the Website in 2006.  You might find something to wile  away a half hour or so.

PPS I don't think you want a picture of my cracked ceiling or an Ipad - so I shall load the photo of my son and I just before he left on his 'rather late' Gap year.
