Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

FRUSTRATIONS OF THE MODERN WORLD

Date: 28th October 2014

Today is definitely not my day.

At lunchtime I went to post a letter First class in the box which has a collection at 4.00pm.  Unfortunately I had already posted the missive when I saw that the collection times have now been changed.  If you want your letter to be collected today you have to have it in the box by 9.00 am - and on Saturday before 7.00am.  So my first class letter will not even be collected before tomorrow and it's chances of actually getting there the next day are minimal.  It wouldn't be so bad but the postal service has continually grown worse over the last few years.

I received a request to renew my Driving licence because I now have passed the magical age where you cease to count - 70.  One is encouraged to complete this process on line which I attempted to do.

The frustrations are legion and I've found this before with Government sites.  Why is it that if I were to order something from, say, Amazon, it will immediately recognize my address.  I live in a flat and despite putting the relevant details and my completely correct postcode, the site wouldn't accept it. Finally I got going again only to find that somewhere along the line I'd registered for the Government Gateway site.  Heaven knows when I did but could I find the password or memorable clues - of course not. So I commenced to fill in a whole load of rigmarole.  I was almost there ...........   the little car you see running along the top was almost at its destination ........ and I got kicked out.  Safari couldn't find the page so please wait a few minutes and try again.  I did this but, of course I'd lost all the information.  So I tried again and was half way through the blasted thing when I was 'struck off' because I'd been more than 20 minutes on the site.  I tried again and this time I got half the information in Welsh.  Having come to a grinding halt yet again I've given up.  I wasted 45 minutes on this pointless exercise and did not achieved my aim.  I am now going to fill in the paper application which is what I wanted to do in the first place.  It has been relatively easy and far less stressful.

Then I hear on the news that some bank or other is closing down yet more branches with yet more loss of jobs because ----- wait for it --- apparently so many of us wish to do our business Online.  Well I don't  - I think the whole thing is an abomination.  We are being pushed more and more Online for everything from banking and even to making appointments with the Doctor.

I am beginning  to loathe this modern, no contact with people, no accountability, the computer says .......... and do please carry round a cart load of passwords, memorable words and associated rubbish.    I'm glad I'm the age I am and would really hate to be young today.
