Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

TOTAL FRUSTRATION - INDIGO PARKING APP - RUBBISH

Date: 8th November 2018

I am not stupid although not totally brilliant on Phone Apps etc. Today I needed to go to London for a Memorial Service.  I decided to drive to Ashford International because there are more trains to London. I arrived there with a half hour to spare before the 10.12 train.   I  had booked and paid... Read more...

FAMILIES IN BRITISH INDIA SOCIETY - My talk

Date: 29th October 2018

Invited to give the After Dinner talk at the FIBIS Conference, I learned that it was recorded and can now be viewed on line - but only if invited by myself or a FIBIS Member.  Had I been aware of it being recorded I'd not have worn the distracting dangly earrings. This is the... Read more...

CANTERBURY WARHORSE

Date: 22nd October 2018

Went to Canterbury Cathedral yesterday to carry out my normal Assisting Duty and was taken aback by this superb massive Horse in the Cathedral Grounds. I'd no idea why it was there but on reading the placard discovered that it has been erected to Commermorate the 8 MILLION (yes 8 MILLION) horses who died during... Read more...

FIBIS CONFERENCE - Families in British India Society

Date: 16th October 2018

My father was born and brought up in India and came to the UK just before Partition.  He was 13 when his mother died and as he said 'At thirteen I wasn't interested in family history' but he did tell me the family went back to the time of Clive of India around 1750 and, as far as he knew, he was... THE BROOKE Charity Supporters' Day

Date: 16th October 2018

I don't ride and have never owned a horse but I love them and think they are the most noble of creatures. Not sure why I was chosen but was delighted to be asked to attend their Supporters' Day at the wonderful Sandhurst Military Academy and to interview #GrantHayterMenzies about his book telling the story... FIBIS and THE BROOKE

Date: 15th October 2018

Hallo Everyone, There must have been a repeat of a programme because my viewer figures went up greatly. I keep apologizing for not writing my blogs like I used to do.  It's for two reasons - one this house move has been simply dreadful.  I was unaware of a thing called 'Snagging' with... Read more...

Mrs Thatcher's Party

Date: 21st July 2018

Mrs Thatcher's Party I'm totally bemused that my name has appeared with a Question Mark in Dennis Thatcher's list. During my 7 years of reading News for the BBC I believed that it was essential to remain ?Neutral? even though I had strong feelings on many issues ! I tend to lean towards Conservative with a small... Read more...

NEW HOME PURCHASE - CAVEAT EMPTOR

Date: 7th June 2018

I'm sorry that I've not been communicating but the house move has been far more traumatic than I could have imagined.  I almost expected the 'little white van' to turn up and cart me away.  But I'm still here and finally seeing above all the mess and problems. I moved from a large... Read more...

#BT - WHAT A RUBBISH PROVIDER.

Date: 7th June 2018

I have been attempting for over a week to access my BT Account.  The Homepage loads with widgets showing and then jumps back to the log-in page.  This happens repeatedly and then I'm told I have tried too often and am locked out.  Online I see that many folk had this self same problem last... APOLOGIES YET AGAIN FOR LACK OF BLOGS - THE FAULT OF #BT

Date: 16th April 2018

HALLO I'm so sorry I haven't been able to post any blogs but BT are a right shower.   Was without a phone line for almost a fortnight and then told I'd have to wait another 9 days for Internet connection.  Have tried dongles both EE and Vodafone - EE was useless with hardly any... Read more...

PERSONAL INFORMATION & ID CARDS

Date: 3rd March 2018

I've said before and will say it again, I can see no earthly reason why people object to ID Cards.  The Liberals state that it 'Infringes our Liberty' - that's a joke.  So much information is held about us every which way that to have an ID would save a lot of time and might even prevent... PRINT YOUR OWN and save the Seller money!

Date: 2nd March 2018

Am I really the only Grumpy Old Woman -GOW - who strongly objects to the Absolute Cheek of companies these days who expect us to print off pages and pages of documentation which in the past came in the form of a nice brochure - easy to read and file.  There used to be a more recent option of paying a few... PARLIAMENTARY PETITION AGAINST LIVE EXPORT OF ANIMALS

Date: 2nd March 2018

By the Way - a huge Thank you if you responded to my plea for you to sign the Petition against the export of live animals. There was a very interesting Debate which I watched for 2 hours but gave up when the young SNP member rose to speak - apart from being against the motion, I couldn't understand him nor his... JOHN MASEFIELD - REYNARD'S LAST RUN

Date: 28th February 2018

There's to be a vote in the Scottish Parliament about the banning of fox hunting.   At school a lasting impression was made on me by John Masefield's poem 'Reynard's Last Run' and i've never ever forgotten the last line - the fox put up a valiant fight and even at the last they... Read more...

PETITION AGAINST THE EXPORT OF LIVE ANIMALS - uk/petitions/200205

Date: 6th February 2018

Dear Friends Some months ago I was one of the first signatories to a Petition to end the live export of animals - in good company with Selina Scott and Joanna Lumley. On Monday there was a meeting in the Jubilee Room at Westminster and we heard from many speakers - Selina spoke for the Campaign, the head of... Read more...

INSURANCE CLAIMS

Date: 18th January 2018

INSURANCE CLAIM I don’t think I am unintelligent but having lost a lovely ring on my Birthday in Paris I was trying to make a claim and almost lost the will to live after a conversation lasting one hour and 2 minutes during which time the Call Centre operative repeatedly had to refer to his... HAPPY NEW YEAR

Date: 17th January 2018

Dear All, I apologise for my lack of Blogs but went down with a virus on Boxing Day and have been very under the weather.  Finally got to see a Doctor and I've a viral infection in the lower lungs - now being treated with steroids - No I'm not developing muscles. I'm also preparing to move... Read more...
