Me looking brave before taking to the air (and the wing) of the plane. Wow, it was cold !! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating.

Jan's Blog

Computers and the internet are amazing things. One of my concerns with putting together this site was that it could remain current, yet with all my travelling I've often much to say, but little time to say it. Years ago when reading the news it would take me days on end to reply to the kind letters people sent. Now, with the magic of the modern age, I can keep you up to date with what I'm doing and other events in my life.

ELECTORAL ROLE - PRIVACY

Date: 18th August 2014

ELECTORAL ROLE

I’ve just had a communication from the local  District Council with regard to the new way you register to vote. Up till now it has been a form which you fill in and tick if you do not want to be on the Open Register. Not only was this always ticked but each year I scrubbed out British and wrote English. Last year I was so brassed off that I wrote across it ‘One can be Scottish, Welsh and Irish, why cannot we be English?’

There is the Electoral Register which  lists names and addresses of those eligible to vote, is used for detecting crimes and calling people for Jury service as well as checking credit worthiness – So Far, So Good.

The Open Register can be BOUGHT by any person, company or organisation. It is used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details.

I’m sorry but I think this is totally wrong. Don’t we have enough intrusion into our privacy without a Government list available to all.

Of course you can opt out of this and I have done so but I do not believe that a list like this should exist in the first place. It means that any Tom, Dick or Harry can find out where you live – all details except your phone number.

The whole system was a push button automated one so what guarantee do I have that my name has been removed from the Open Register?  None.

ADDENDUM - I have just received a letter informing me that my name has been taken off the Open Register.  Thanks. But I still think one should 'Opt In - not have to Opt Out'.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

If you buy anything on line these days, and you haven’t ordered before, you are not just allowed to place an order you also and invariably have to register and they want email details, phone details etc. Then, of course, you get bombarded with their publicity material, special offers etc.
